Chapter 13

Lady Anne and Robert Darcy were together in the master’s study at Pemberley. A letter had arrived from William, which they decided to peruse together. Darcy held the pages and read it aloud for his wife.

20 September 1806

Netherfield Park, Hertfordshire

Mother and Father,

So far, my stay in the area has been most pleasant. The Bingleys are very good and generous hosts and anyone who would eschew the connection because they are in trade would be in error.

Father, would you believe the Bingleys’ neighbour is none other than Mr. Thomas Bennet, the one who still holds all of the records for the most chess games won at Cambridge? Were you and Uncle Reggie not at Trinity College at the same time he was?

“We will have to tell William the truth of our connections to Bennet when we see him in London,” Darcy stated stoically as his wife nodded her agreement.

He has only four daughters and no sons, all very pretty and well-behaved, accomplished young ladies. Only the eldest, Miss Jane Bennet, is out. The next, Miss Elizabeth, is sixteen and is the most intelligent young lady I have ever met. Unlike her sisters, she has dark hair and green eyes. She loves to read, as much as we do, evidently, a trait inherited from her father, who is a bibliophile. We have begun to have debates on books we have both read, and some other subjects like the war. I suspect that at times she takes a position not her own just to encourage debate.

Next is Miss Mary, who will be fifteen later this year. She also loves to read, although not quite as many subjects as Miss Elizabeth. The youngest is Miss Kate. Would you believe that her familiar name is Catherine Violet, the same as Aunt Cathy?

“I have two observations. One is that I believe our son is infatuated with Miss Elizabeth. Look at all he wrote about her juxtaposed against the little he told us of her sisters,” Lady Anne stated.

“And the second! Bennet named one of his daughters after Cathy,” Darcy agreed.

“Read on, Robert, he may give us more information about Bennet.”

Recently we were at a dinner hosted by a neighbour of the Bennets and the Bingleys. It was the first time any of us heard either Miss Bingley or any of the Bennet sisters play or sing.

Mother, you would love to hear their proficiency on the pianoforte, and Miss Bennet’s on the harp. Miss Bingley is proficient, but not at the level of the Bennet sisters, especially Miss Elizabeth’s.

I have never heard another play with so much feeling in the way she interpreted the music. That was nothing to her singing. I was convinced an angel had come down from on high to sing for us.

Now I must relay something to you which has puzzled me, Andy, and Rich as well. If Miss Elizabeth had blond hair or Cousin Anne dark hair, and they were the same height—Miss Elizabeth is shorter—they would look like sisters. Rich asked and they are not related to the de Bourghs at all.
